Tropical Community Aquarium
The goal of most aquariums is to capture the look of natural environmental characteristics for specific parts of the world. Fish and plants in such aquariums are usually the kind that would live in these environments in nature. But the goal of community aquarium is different – it is to create a collection of plants and fish, which get on well together, but they don’t need to be from the same place. more info
Our aquarium has several species of fish. The most popular fish with the class are the Angel Fish, Neon Tetra and Borneo Sucker. The other fish are the Rummy Nose Tetra, Corydoras Julii and Black Widow Tetra. They are kept in a 2ft aquarium (donated from a local aquarium shop) and are fed Sera Vipagran, Sera Flake and freeze dried bloodworms.
Betta Splendens (Siamese Fighting Fish)
Siamese fighting fish have the ability to breathe oxygen from the atmosphere. This is possible because of a specialised breathing organ known as the labyrinth. As an air breather Siamese fighting fish can be kept without the need for water oxygenation. more info
We have several different types of Betta fish in a variety of colours. They include: Plakat (short fin), Delta, Halfmoon, Crown Tail and Veil Tail. They are all kept in individual 1.5 Litre glass containers and fed mostly Hikari Betta Bio-Gold. We use Indian Almond leaves to tan the water and keep them healthy.
Insects
Spiny Leaf (Extatosoma Tiaratum) insects belong to the group called phasmids. Phasmids are insects that eat leaves and resemble leaves or sticks. more info
Our Spiny Leaf insects are kept in a reptile cage that provides good ventilation. It has desert sand on the bottom with a glass bottle to hold the leaves and water.
